Steven G. Gilbert was recognized by the Society of Toxicology with its Public Communications Award for broadening the public’s understanding of toxicological issues. He is one of two recipients who will receive the award at the Society’s Annual Meeting and ToxExpo in March. Gilbert is a former member of the faculty and now an affiliate professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences.

“I was thrilled to receive this recognition because I believe that one of the most important things that toxicologists and public health professionals can do is to share their knowledge and scientific information about the health effects of chemicals as widely as possible,” Gilbert said.

Gilbert founded and directs of the Institute of Neurotoxicology and Neurological Disorders, a nonprofit organization that distributes scientific information about the health and environmental impacts of toxic chemicals. In 2006, he created Toxipedia, a free online encyclopedia of chemicals, drugs, health conditions and consumer products and how they can affect human health and the environment

In 2004, Gilbert published A Small Dose of Toxicology. He also created an interactive poster, Milestones of Toxicology that covers major players in the history of toxicology from antiquity to the present. The poster has been translated into more than 14 languages.
