Anirban Basu and Ruth Etzioni from the University of Washington School of Public Health were named fellows of the American Statistical Association (ASA). They were officially recognized for their professional contributions to the field of statistical science at an August 2 awards ceremony during the ASA Joint Statistical Meeting in Chicago.

Basu, professor of health services, was selected for his “innovative work at the intersection of microeconomics, statistics, health policy, cost effectiveness analysis, causal inference modeling and outcomes research,” according to an ASA press release. Basu is also a professor of pharmacy and adjunct professor of economics at the UW.

Etzioni, affiliate professor in the departments of biostatistics and health services, was selected for “developing statistical methods and models to address important public health questions in prostate and other cancers, and for significant contributions to the development of national clinical practice guidelines,” according to the press release. Etzioni is also a full member in biostatistics of the Division of Public Health Sciences at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

“The fields of statistics and data science continue to play prominent roles in advancing society and experience unprecedented growth because of these individuals’ efforts to innovate and adapt new approaches, expand foundational knowledge and create collaborative opportunities,” said ASA President Jessica Utts. “Among the foremost members in their respective specialties, fellows not only raise the profile of our profession, but also raise the bar for their colleagues and, in doing so, showcase the power and value of statistics and data science.”
