Program & Degree Updates: New Faculty and Staff!

Anjulie Ganti joined the School of Public Health in July 2018 as a Senior Lecturer in Health Services and as a full time instructor in the Public Health-Global Health program. She is the faculty lead for the Public Health Capstone, Honors Seminar, and Public Health Internship.

Joe Harper Kowalczyk became the Academic Services Director in August 2018. Formerly in our Adviser & Career Development Coordinator position, he manages program operations including orchestrating student and academic services, supervising the advising team, and coordinating admissions and enrollment.

LC Pring joined the program as the Student Services Assistant in September 2018. He provides program support, including coordinating use of the SPH Student Center, scheduling, and managing communications with students, staff, and faculty.

Jillian McBride-Payne joined the program as the Adviser & Career Development Coordinator in December 2018. She provides academic and career advising to prospective students and current majors, conducts career development workshops, and oversees the alumni council.

Caz Salamanca resigned as an Adviser & Diversity Programs Coordinator in the program in March 2019. He left to serve as the Director of the Asian-Pacific Islander Cultural Center at University of California-Santa Cruz. A search for his replacement is under way.

Admissions & Enrollment:

  • In AY 2018-2019, we admitted 195 for AUT start, and 40 for WIN start (235 total)
  • For AY 2019-2020, we received 334 applications and admitted 185 new students for AUT start

Advising & Outreach Highlights:

  • In-class workshops and alumni panels on topics including: building professional relationships, cover letters, informational interviews, and searching for graduate programs
  • Proactive advising model continued and incorporated more group advising for course registration and graduation
  • Mentored and supported student leaders in the new Students of Color for Public Health organization
  • Outreached to local community colleges, visiting 5 local campuses and a new visit to Yakima Valley Community College

Collaboration Highlights:

  • Collaborated with Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) to host outreach and application workshops for first-generation, low income, and underrepresented minority (URM) students.
  • Coordinated with the Global Health Resource Center to support incorporation of undergraduate students into Global Health Career Week
  • Partnered with SPH undergraduate programs, UW First Year Programs, Animal Encounters, UW Environmental Health & Safety, UW Office of Animal Welfare, and UW Facilities to host 4th annual Dawg Daze Petting Zoo (480 attendees)
  • Partnered with TRIO/Student Support Services (SSS) in delivery of a new student seminar course in AUT quarter
  • Students in Public Health Capstone engaged with over thirty community-based organizations, providing approximately 12,800 hours of direct service to address housing insecurity, hunger, access to healthcare, and education with vulnerable populations such as youth and older adults, coordinated in partnership with the Carlson Leadership & Public Service Center

Teaching & Curriculum

  • Faculty development opportunities included two half-day retreats for faculty teaching the SPH core courses
  • PH-GH faculty and staff received focused training in the use of pronouns, land acknowledgements, and mental health & wellness
  • Sara Mackenzie, Anjulie Ganti, and Marissa Baker were CAUSE Fellows focusing on increasing evidence-based teaching
  • Increased use of active learning classroom space by integrated core course instructors
  • Established new service-learning and internship partnerships on campus with Hall Health and the Student Well-Being Collaborative

Alumni Council

  • PH-GH Major Alumni Council participated in alumni panels in SPH integrated core courses, organized alumni socials, and student-alumni networking events
  • The Alumni Council held its annual election and Kimanh Tran was elected as Student Representative in May 2019

  • The school-wide major fits with a range of student interests and career trajectories, including graduate work in all areas of public health, health and allied health professional programs, non-health graduate work (law, business, administration), non-profit agencies, for-profit agencies, and service.     Ariana Anjaz, 2019 was a recipient of the Husky 100 and SPH Undergraduate Student Community Award, and she is the Assistant Director, Healthy Living at the YMCA in Kent, WA

    Art Aguilar, 2019, Idanis Cruz, 2019, and Rachel Massey, 2019 were recipients of the Husky 100

    Christelle Silue, 2019 was a recipient of the SPH Outstanding Undergraduate Award and is a Donor Relations Manager at Powerful Voices in Seattle, WA

    Emma Spickard, 2019 was recipient of the UW President’s Award and was selected for the Bonderman Travel Fellowship

    Josh Klett, 2018 is a Senior Program Assistant for Global Health Security at Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH) in Seattle, WA

    Sydney Russell, 2018 is a Public Health Analyst at Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA): Office of Regional Operations and received the Community Health Education Specialist (CHES) credential

    Theresa Mata-Cervantes, 2019 was a recipient of UW McNair Scholarship and the WSPHA Exceptional Student Award

PH-GH Goals for 2019-2020

  • Expand annual cohort from 250 to 300 students starting in AUT 2019
  • Increase offerings of required core courses over the next three years starting with SPH 380: History & Practice of Public Health being offered in AUT, WIN, and SPR and SPH 489: Structural Racism in Public Health being offered twice per quarter in AUT, WIN, and SPR for 2019-2020
  • Expand experiential learning partnerships and opportunities, in particular focusing on Public Health Capstone and internships
  • Evaluate and re-implement tracking and reporting systems pertaining to students’ academic performance
  • Evaluate and address equity, diversity, and inclusion needs in the PH-GH curriculum, praxis, advising, and programming
  • Enhance student leadership and alumni engagement through advising and programming; e.g. mentoring
