Introduces undergraduates to public health issues, such as health disparities, emerging infectious diseases, chronic diseases, access to health care and modes of health care delivery, the geography of health, and the effects of behaviors, health care, nutrition, society, genetics, and the environment on health and disease.
Likely Careers
An undergraduate degree in public health is an initial step on the path to a career or graduate studies in public health or other health related careers – often public or private agencies in the areas of health education, project management, policy, or communication.

- Explain the processes, approaches and interventions that identify and address the major health-related needs and concerns of populations
- Explain the history and philosophy of population health across the globe and in societies, including the global burden of disease
- Define the fundamental characteristics, organizational structures and workforce of the US health system as well as the differences between systems in other countries
- Describe the socioeconomic, behavioral, biological, environmental and other factors that impact human health and contribute to health disparities
- Explain basic concepts of population dynamics, organizational dynamics and demographic change
Natural Science & Environment
- Explain the underlying science of human health and disease including opportunities for promoting and protecting health across the life span
- Explain how the physical and built environment impacts health
Ethics, Human Rights, & Social Justice
- Apply ethical and social justice frameworks to decision-making in public health research, collaboration, and practice
- Understand how advocacy is used for the protection and promotion of the public’s health at all levels of society
Policy and Politics
- Apply basic concepts of legal, ethical, economic and regulatory dimensions of health care and public health policy and the roles, influences and responsibilities of the different agencies and branches of government
- Identity features of global economic, political, cultural context as it relates to health
Assessment & Measurement
- Apply the scientific method and thinking to complex questions
- Understand basic research [qualitative and quantitative] methodologies and concepts to collect, analyze, and develop evidence-based interventions
- Identify the fundamental concepts and features of project implementation, including planning, assessment and evaluation, and the role of implementation science

- Understand the importance of collaborating with partner organizations to assess and strengthen operational capacity
- Demonstrate the ability to locate, use, evaluate and synthesize public health information
