Description
Students in the MPH program acquire knowledge and skills in the following areas: determinants of health and disease; external and internal factors shaping health care and public health systems; structure, function, and performance of health systems; policy analysis and development; management; strategies for improving health; and evaluation methods. Required coursework includes a focus in the areas of management, policy or health economics. Optional concentrations are available for students in the in-residence program who want further depth of knowledge in health policy, the social and behavioral sciences, or issues pertaining to the health of women, children and families.
Applying
Priority is given to applicants with clearly-defined training interests that align well with the strengths of the program, particularly those who already have had two or more years of relevant work experience.

Competencies
Upon satisfactory completion of the MPH in Health Services, graduates will be able to:
- Meet the generic SPH learning objectives for the MPH degree;
- Meet the Core-Specific Learning Objectives for all MPH students;
- Assess community health problems and make recommendations to address these problems through community collaboration;
- Identify determinants of access and delivery of health services; use this information to design strategies to improve the availability of health services by drawing on health sector and non-health sector resources;
- Manage, and use data to continuously improve, health programs and services; and
- Design and conduct studies of effectiveness, efficiency, and outcomes of programs, interventions, and policies aimed at improving the health of individuals, populations, and/or communities.
