Poll shows Washington voters willing to pay higher taxes to ensure health care

A poll of Washington registered voters taken in October showed, at that time, strong support for health care reform and willingness to pay higher taxes to guarantee insurance coverage for themselves and others.

Austin Ross, who spent his entire career at the Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, was inducted into Modern Healthcare's Health Care Hall of Fame on March 21. The late Senator Ted Kennedy was also inducted at the American College of Healthcare Executives 2010 Annual Leadership Congress in Chicago.

Post-Bachelor Fellows at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) have planted their flag in the global health landscape in a forceful "Comment" published in The Lancet that invites a new generation of "skeptical optimists" to change the way health problems are measured.

The fellows were invited by Richard Horton, editor of The Lancet, to write a Comment for the journal earlier this year. The Comment was made available online Nov. 11 and appears in the Nov. 21 issue of the journal.

On December 1—World AIDS Day—Grace John-Stewart, MD, PhD will present the School of Public Health's Fall 2009 Distinguished Faculty Lecture and School of Medicine's Science in Medicine Lecture: Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV-1: From Discovery to Delivery. The lecture will be presented at 1:30PM in Hogness Auditorium, A-420 Health Sciences. Dr. John-Stewart is Professor of Global Health, Professor of Medicine in the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Professor of Epidemiology in Public Health. She also directs the UW Center for AIDS and STD.

All of these School of Public Health projects have recently received funding thanks to the federal stimulus package President Obama signed in February. The package contained extensive funding for science, engineering, education, social sciences, and the arts.

The Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars Program (FICRS) has announced that Kristin Beima-Sofie of University of Washington School of Public Health has been selected as a Scholar for the 2009-2010 cohort.

Kristin Beima-Sofie, MPH/PhD candidate, and Alfred Osoti, MBChB, MMed will work in Nairobi, Kenya at University of Nairobi under the mentorship of Carey Farquhar, MD, MPH, University of Washington Harborview Medical Center International AIDS Research and Training Program (AIRTP); and James Kiarie,MD, MPH, University of Nairobi, AIRTP.

Northwest Public Health has won an award of excellence in APEX 2009, a nationwide program that recognizes excellence in graphic design, editorial content, and communications effectiveness in a variety of media. The award was for the journal's fall/winter 2008 issue, "Climate Change: Challenging Public Health." Susan Allan is editor-in-chief and Katherine Hall managing editor of the journal, which is published by the Northwest Center for Public Health Practice of the University of Washington School of Public Health.

Rory Murphy, Graduate Program Assistant in our Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, was chosen by the Graduate School to receive their first annual Graduate Program Assistant (GPA) Service Award. Julia Carlson (Director, Graduate Education Services) said the committee decision was unanimous.

Frederick Rivara, MD, MPH was selected by the Alumni Advisory Board of the UW School of Public Health to receive the School's 2009 Distinguished Alumni Award.

Dr. Rivara, who received an MPH from the School's Department of Health Services in 1980, is currently the George Adkins Professor of Pediatrics for the UW School of Medicine, where he is also Vice Chair for Academic Affairs and Head of the General Division of the Department of Pediatrics. He is Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology in the School of Public Health.

Dean Patricia Wahl will present the third annual Service Award for Community Partners to Alison Eisinger and Scott Morrow at the School's annual MPH Practicum Reception on May 19, 2009. Eisinger is executive director of the Seattle/King County Coalition on Homelessness (SKCCH); Morrow is a community organizer working with the Seattle Housing and Resource Effort (SHARE) and the Women's Housing, Equality and Enhancement League (WHEEL).

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and the University of Washington (UW) have announced a new collaboration in statistical genetics to aid the analysis of information from large genetic databases. The new alliance will use statistical approaches to rapidly analyze data and predict responses to new therapies. As a result of this alliance, the UW team will be able to use GSK's large genetic data sets and GSK will gain access to the UW's vast expertise in statistical genetics.

On November 19, 2008, Professor Adam Drewnowski will give the Fall 2008 Distinguished Faculty Lecture: Food, Incomes, and Health.

The lecture will be presented at 4:00 PM in Room T639 in the Health Sciences Building. The Director of the UW Center for Public Health Nutrition, Drewnowski is also Professor of Epidemiology and Medicine, Director of the Center for Public Health Nutrition and the UW Center for Obesity Research, and a Joint Member of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
